A Personal Transformation Through Hiking

How a shy teenager, afraid of challenges, transformed into a confident, resilient and compassionate young woman - all through the power of hiking.

While there is no doubt that hiking is physically demanding and improves physical fitness, there are often subtle yet profound personal transformations that occur from conquering those mountains.

Below are some inspiring words from the beautiful Mylee (17 years old), who completed the PNG Kokoda Track after completing 6 months of hiking training.

"It was an enlightening experience to say in the least and as I sit here today reminiscing in hindsight, I have my ‘then’ self to thank for the person I am today. I consider sitting on the crest of the track looking out into the valley as the ultimate climax. It was the single moment that I can attest to having consolidated my new self.

On a physical platform, hiking offers an extraordinary form of exercise whilst rewarding you with sublime views & clarity of mind. But it also delves much deeper into a surreal exploration of self. With my team of strangers we grew individually & together.

Today, I see myself as a nurturer, someone who fundamentally values empathy & allows it to dictate my everyday. It was my decision to hike, to look to the experience of my friends, to revel in resilience, finding comfort in my peers, allowing me to feel confident and helped define the influence of values I now hold dear.

Whilst the pillars of self are subjective, you will often find they give greater meaning to each other; they are analogous. You must be truly compassionate to be empathetic - which can only be achieved once you face what connection means to you. A taking to connection & resilience, in every sense defines growth. I learnt this simply by walking, with some truly inspiring strangers.”
